// Lost in the Wild (Critters) //
By Rinus Bot

In a near future, drones and robots may need to share the outdoors with nature’s critters. How to limit the negative effects that these technological 'creatures' have on fauna is yet unknown. Rinus Bot studies reactions of wild birds to 'unmanned aerial vehicles', or drones. He envisions an “autonomous research” method that allows drones and robots to autonomously gather all data required for understanding their own effects on nature, by cohabiting with animals in nature.
In his work, Rinus employs film, animation and data visualizations to explore complex topics in an intuitive way. As such he directed and produced the video “Lost in the Wild” to explain the autonomous research paradigm underlying his empirical research on bird behavior. This sci-fi nature documentary also serves as a vision of a future where robots and drones share nature with their biological counterparts.
